AMSTERDAM, IBC2006 - Sept. 7, 2006 - TV4, the largest commercial television channel in Sweden, recently selected Ardendo and Omneon to provide a complete solution for the IT-based production and archiving of digital media assets, including the broadcaster's extensive news and sports programming.

The Ardendo software provided in the deal will handle all aspects of media management in the facility from ingest to low-resolution editing and archiving. The software will be used to manage content on Omneon SpectrumT media server systems and an Omneon MediaGridT active-storage system, which will provide central storage for the news production environment. Under Ardendo control, material ingested into an Omneon Spectrum server is transferred to the MediaGrid — even as it is recorded — and is immediately available for editing. Completed materials are transferred to Omneon Spectrum playout servers.

The new Ardendo software includes: ARDOME for media management and archiving; DART for ingest scheduling; Ardenc for transcoding; Ardcap for ingest and play-out; EasyCut for browsing editing from standard PCs; and Precut for browse, cut, and clip generation. With this new Ardendo solution, TV4 will archive, log, insert metadata, and perform basic editing functions. DART will be used by the channel to provide up to 20 simultaneous channels of video feed ingest.

The Omneon MediaGrid is the first active storage system of its kind, designed specifically for the demands of working with large digital media files within broadcast and video production facilities. Combining grid storage and grid computing through the use of multiple intelligent, interconnected-yet-independent storage servers, the new system dramatically enhances the efficiency of digital media access for users and applications across the entire broadcast workflow. The MediaGrid system provides centralized shared storage that is scalable in capacity, bandwidth, and media-processing power. The initial configuration at TV4 includes 10 TB of fully mirrored storage.
