SUNNYVALE, Calif. — March 5, 2007 — Omneon Video Networks today announced that Oklahoma Educational Television Authority (OETA), a PBS affiliate based in Oklahoma City, has expanded its new Omneon Spectrum™ SD/HD media server system with the recent purchase of the Omneon ConformTool™, which enables full integration of Avid systems into a highly flexible Omneon broadcast server infrastructure.
OETA first installed Omneon Spectrum server system at its Oklahoma City facilities in 2005, and in 2006 the company added HD capability, along with additional channels and storage. The server system runs under the control of Sundance Digital Titan automation, and the new implementation of ConformTool integrates OETA’s storage and editing systems more tightly by streamlining the transfer of files between the Spectrum server and Avid systems.
“We were attracted to the Omneon Spectrum media server because of its flexible I/O offering, the ability to handle multiple formats, and its modular infrastructure, all of which are very useful for the world of public television,” said Earle Connors, director of engineering at OETA. “We broadcast in HDMPEG, DV25, and IMX, so we needed a versatile playout solution, and the Spectrum media server has been just that. It has formed the foundation for our digital playout operations, providing tight integration with our automation and editing systems.”
OETA’s Spectrum server configuration today provides a total of 24 channels and 13 TB of storage. The system supports playout of programming for six channels, on air 24 hours a day, with both PBS national and locally produced programs geared to viewers across Oklahoma. The integration of the server with OETA’s editing system allows for promo creation and editing of programs to meet local broadcast standards.
The Spectrum media server acts as shared storage for Avid editors, who use the Omneon ConformTool browser menu to view stored files. ConformTool enables simple drag-and-drop functionality so that files from the Spectrum can be moved easily onto a workstation and then into an open bin within the Avid project. Clips are converted to Avid-compatible OMF or MXF files and transferred in the background at much faster than real-time. Because media is transferred over a data network, multiple servers and editing stations are able to work together.
