Omneon Debuts Next-Generation HD MediaPort
for Spectrum™ Server System

SUNNYVALE, Calif. — April 14, 2007 — Omneon Video Networks, Inc., today announced that it will introduce a new family of media interface components for the Omneon Spectrum™ media server at NAB2007 that adds new HD encoding and other advanced media processing capabilities to the platform. Built on the principles that have made the Spectrum widely accepted — scalability, flexibility, and reliability — the MediaPort 5000 series provides integrated HD ingest, enabling an end-to-end HD or SD ingest and playout solution from Omneon.

As a modular Spectrum component, these new MediaPorts can be connected easily to any existing Omneon Spectrum media server to add new HD ingest functionality and can be mixed with other Omneon MediaPorts for SD within the same system. Multiple MediaPorts can be connected to a single Spectrum system to satisfy multichannel ingest or playout requirements. The addition of a new MediaPort to an existing server requires no system downtime or disruptive upgrade. In fact, it can usually be done while the system remains online.

The new MediaPort 5000 series is based on a flexible architecture that allows for the use of either hardware or software codec technology, depending on format. This “right tool for the job” approach ensures that the most advanced and cost-effective codec solutions can be utilized as needed in Omneon MediaPorts. The flexibility of the new architecture also provides a path for the integration of new advanced codec technology as it becomes available in the market.

The first specific product model of this new generation is the MediaPort 5300 Multi-Rate MPEG-2 HD Encoder. The MediaPort 5300 utilizes high-performance codec technology licensed from Sony Corporation for cost-effective and high quality HD encoding. Initially designed for Sony’s XDCAM HD products, the use of this new codec technology in the new MediaPort 5300 enables support for MPEG-2 HD encoding in both I-Frame and Long GOP formats and in bit rates ranging from 18 to 78 megabits per second. Offered in a single- or dual-channel configuration, the MediaPort 5300 delivers one or two channels of HD encoding, further improving the cost-effectiveness of the Spectrum server. As with all new Omneon MediaPorts, the new 5300 supports up to 16 channels of audio, useful for today’s surround sound and multilanguage broadcasting.

Omneon provides a full line of MediaPort interface adapters for video, audio, timecode, and control. As with all Omneon Spectrum media server system components, these MediaPorts can be included in initial configurations or added to server systems already online. Omneon Spectrum systems can support multiple MediaPorts for multichannel and mixed format requirements.
