SUNNYVALE, Calif. — May 1, 2007 — Omneon Video Networks today announced that China Education Television (CETV) has installed an Omneon Spectrum™ media server system at the heart of its new digital infrastructure to support playout of 10 channels. Delivered and installed by Beijing-based systems integrator Guanhua Glory, the Omneon server systems went live to air on Jan. 1, supporting the broadcast of diverse educational programming on channels including CETV-1, CETV-2, CETV-3, and On-air Classroom.
“Many well-known vendors participated in the tender for our server system, but we felt that most of them were too similar to previous technology: concentrated, embedded systems that would be difficult to maintain and repair despite their popularity and record of reliability,” said Mr. Wang Tao, chief technology officer at CETV. “We wanted a reliable, flexible, low-maintenance server system with a distributed architecture that would enable better redundancy for on-air operations and greater scalability for future expansion. The Omneon Spectrum met these requirements.”
“The Omneon server system is a highly reliable and easily scalable solution for the broadcast industry, and we’re pleased to work with Omneon once again in bringing this technology to the Chinese market,” said Derek Chau, deputy managing director of Guanhua Glory. “As CETV continues to expand its channel offerings, the Omneon system will allow for easy expansion without disruption of ongoing channel playout.”
The Omneon Spectrum system operates under the control of Wuyou Automation software from Founder Digital Video, a well-established vendor within the Chinese broadcast market. The highly automated playout infrastructure now in place at CETV replaces analog devices used in an earlier tape-based workflow. The Spectrum deployment is part of a larger project geared to meet the SARFT requirements for digital broadcasting. CETV will continue the overhaul of its transmission operations and then implement post-production and media management systems, as well.
A cost-effective and flexible media server designed for the professional television industry, the Omneon Spectrum media server provides a reliable and scalable infrastructure for broadcast playout and storage applications. The scalable, distributed architecture of the modular Omneon Spectrum server system will allow CETV to expand its operations incrementally as it continues to extend its educational program offering.
“It is a very exciting time for the Chinese broadcast market. Companies such as CETV bring a growing range of engaging and informative television programming to China,” said Andrew Thornton, Omneon vice president of sales for Asia Pacific and Japan. “The Omneon Spectrum server provides a stable yet flexible platform for multichannel playout that will help companies like CETV not only today but as they continue to expand in the future.”
