Spain's Video Catalogo Movil Chooses Omneon To Reduce Production Costs For Customers

Sunnyvale, Calif.-- November 19, 2001

In a move to streamline production operations and reduce costs to their customers, Video Catalogo Movil (VCM) in Spain has chosen Omneon's Networked Content Server for their storage infrastructure. Video Catalogo Movil, based in Madrid, is a leading provider of television productions for sporting events, mobile news broadcasts, concerts, telethons, daytime dramas, series programming and documentaries. VCM is advancing their technology and equipment in order to continue to provide the highest quality programming for their customers. Concurrently, they are reducing costs by replacing less efficient, outdated technology. The six-channel system is being completed by Omneon's Spanish distributor and integrator, XELTEC Video.

"At VCM we are moving toward a tapeless system to offer more cost-effective disk-based storage," said Luis Javier Ojeda, general manager of VCM. "We took our time in the discovery process to ensure that the server we chose would incorporate the most advanced technology and be the best investment over the long term. VCM is a pioneer in the production market, and as such, we wanted an infrastructure that will help us provide the best technology so we can provide further advantages to our customers. It was a very competitive process. The Omneon architecture has more potential for our current and future needs."

The initial Omneon sale is a basic system with 40 hours of storage for 50Mbps MPEG content. VCM plans to use the system to offer their customers' significant savings in production and post-production time, video tape stock, and other equipment and maintenance costs. Using the Networked Content Server, VCM will record programming and events daily at their studios. In addition to in-house camera feeds to the Omneon server, the recordings also include several remote camera feeds. Throughout the day, VCM producers select their shots and edit the content. Using Omneon's ClipTool™ software application, the producers can manage the recording process in a simple control panel, allowing them to create and record files, locate files in storage, and verify the clips on playback. A single operator can manage all the ingest channels simultaneously. After clips have been recorded on the Omneon server, they are then available for distribution.

"We have been working with VCM for a long time, and know they set their standards high," said Carlos Xifra, president and CEO of XELTEC Video. "Their evaluation process was thorough, and as Omneon's distributor, we knew the Networked Content Server offered the cost-effective scalability and flexibility they needed to achieve their fast-paced production cycles. The Omneon server allows VCM producers to re-purpose their content as necessary and share it across various production systems. As one of Spain's premier production companies, VCM now has "tapeless" capability and the flexibility to match the Omneon platform to the required service."

The six-channel Omneon system was designed, supplied and installed by XELTEC Video, Spain's distributor for Omneon.
