File-based workflows offer the advantage of faster-than-realtime media processing. Stages of the broadcast workflow such as video and audio transcoding; file rewrapping; metadata, closed caption or subtitle insertion; quality checking; audio track addition or tagging; and sub-clipping, file-flattening or edit list conforming can be automated and accelerated.

Application developers use the Omneon Media API or open QuickTime and MXF tools to access, parse, and write files into the Spectrum media servers and will be able to use the same Media API for media files residing in the MediaGrid content library. Omneon grid CPU management software allows distributed media processing applications to utilize multiple CPUs within the Omneon MediaGrid system. This enables Grid-Powered applications to process media in much faster than realtime. Files will not need to leave the MediaGrid to be processed.

The collaboration between Omneon and HARRIS Automation - formerly Louth Automation - began in 1999, and continues with the development of improved interfaces for the transmission marketplace. Omneon has adopted the widely used video disc control protocol (VDCP), strengthening the interface capabilities of both companies and underlining Omneon's commitment to preserving (and enhancing) their customers' legacy systems. Harris Automation now supports Omneon?s widely adopted Player API for Ethernet control on both their ADC 100 and next generation automation system (HRS). Omneon's file system simplifies the operation of Harris' media management function, and provides a powerful platform for interfacing with Harris automation systems. Omneon also has a proven solution with the Harris GMT product used in conjunction with archive managers (namely OTG) during the past two NAB conventions. Encoda Systems was acquired by Harris in late 2004. Encoda offers a full range of master control, ingest automation, asset management, remote automation and network monitoring systems that meet the engineering needs of TV and radio broadcasters, cable networks, cable operations and satellite operations. The DAL product family can be scaled from single station/channel operations up to 1,000 channel, centralized operations. Its systems allow broadcasters to support a wide range of operational models, whether everything is controlled from one location or multiple locations.
