Omneon ProXchange™
Accelerated Content Transcoding

Omneon ProXchange is a high-performance transcoding system for high-speed, large-volume, multi-format media conversions. Designed specifically to take advantage of the combined storage and processing power of Omneon MediaGrid, ProXchange delivers incredibly fast grid-based media conversion.

Broadcasters, studios, post houses and production facilities increasingly need to work with multiple formats of a media file as it moves from acquisition to production to distribution to archive. In addition, most content owners need to efficiently create derivative versions of their content for distribution to multiple platforms, each requiring that content in a different format. ProXchange software streamlines the transcoding process to enable more efficient workflows and lower operating costs by eliminating external file management and the need for multiple add-on systems associated with traditional transcoding applications.

By combining the storage and processing environment, ProXchange provides an easy-to-manage, scalable media conversion infrastructure and removes the need for multiple file transfers between different silo systems. The scalable architecture of Omneon MediaGrid enables ProXchange to deliver new levels of performance by distributing jobs across multiple processors in a MediaGrid active storage system.

Benefits

  • Takes advantage of available processing power in the Omneon MediaGrid active storage system for faster-than-realtime transcoding
  • Streamlines workflow by eliminating external islands of storage and processing, and file transfers between them
  • Scales performance as the Omneon MediaGrid storage system grows
  • Completely automated, rules-based engine ensures fast, reliable operations, without human interaction
  • Repurposes media automatically for new distribution platforms
  • Offers flexibility through broad support of production formats including DNxHD, AVC-Intra, XDCAM HD, DV, DV50, DVCProHD, MPEG-2 SD and HD, H.264 and more

Grid-Powered Content Conversion

The combination of Omneon ProXchange and the Omneon MediaGrid active storage system makes converting and repurposing media more efficient and cost-effective than ever before. ProXchange uses the available processing capability of Omneon MediaGrid to deliver fast performance that scales as the Omneon MediaGrid system grows. ProXchange takes full advantage of grid processing by utilizing a pool of available Omneon MediaGrid ContentServers to perform transcode jobs. This grid processing capability eliminates the file movements required by traditional transcoding solutions that rely on separate storage and processing resources. The unique approach of ProXchange allows deployment of a single infrastructure for both storage and processing requirements, minimizing system complexity and reducing the total cost of ownership.

Automated Operations

ProXchange has a rules engine that can be configured to automatically convert content from one format to another, based on a user-defined profile. Users can create rules to transcode content of a particular format, set the desired output formats and control more detailed parameters such as bit rates and output directories.

Once a set of rules has been applied to a specific directory in Omneon MediaGrid, ProXchange will automatically begin processing any files which appear there. ProXchange can produce multiple output formats, each transferred to an assigned directory within Omneon MediaGrid. For example, ProXchange can take MPEG-2 50 Mbps I-Frame content, automatically create a transmission copy in MPEG-2 12 Mbps Long GOP, and at the same time create an H.264 clip for distribution to IPTV or the web. Full monitoring and reporting keeps operators informed of the progress and transcoding performance of their jobs in addition to flagging any potential issues.

Omneon ProXchange Components

The ProXchange system is comprised of a ProXchange JobDirector (PXD-2000) which is responsible for managing and controlling all jobs within the ProXchange system and optional additional ProXchange JobScalers (PXD-2001) which can be added to the system for scalability and increased performance. Depending on the desired throughput and required performance of the system, any number of additional ProXchange JobScalers can be added to the system in order to manage simultaneous processing of content stored on Omneon MediaGrid.

ProXchange JobDirector

The ProXchange JobDirector runs the ProXchange server management application that stores the rules and manages transcode jobs within the system. The JobDirector is also responsible for splitting and distributing jobs to the available ContentServers in Omneon MediaGrid and recombining the output content as it is processed. When a job is submitted to the system, it is added to the ProXchange JobDirector queue for processing. ProXchange JobDirector requests a pool of available processing resources from Omneon MediaGrid and when allocated, the application divides this job into smaller parts that are each assigned to a ContentServer in Omneon MediaGrid. ContentServers process these tasks in parallel and return their results to the ProXchange JobDirector where the resulting content is reassembled in the new format on the Omneon MediaGrid system.

ProXchange JobScaler

ProXchange JobScalers are added to a system to increase scalability and performance for parallel processing of transcode jobs by the ProXchange system. By adding ProXchange JobScalers to the system, the ProXchange JobDirector is able to distribute work to the JobScalers, resulting in better performance when processing multiple parallel jobs. Such performance improvements become particularly beneficial when working with large Omneon MediaGrid systems with many available ContentServers because the volume of work that can be handled is greatly increased. Additional ProXchange JobScalers can share the load of the ProXchange JobDirector by completing the work required to split the jobs in to manageable sub-tasks and perform the wrapping and re-wrapping often required in transcode jobs.

ProXchange Manager

The ProXchange Manager application is a Windows® application to allow the configuration and setting of transcode rules and presets. Once a transcode rule is allocated to a specific directory, all transcoding of the content in that directory is automated.

Omneon ProXchange™ is a high-performance transcoding system specifically designed for high-volume multi-format media environments. As the first application to take advantage of the combined storage and processing architecture of Omneon MediaGrid, ProXchange delivers grid-based transcoding of media files stored within MediaGrid. ProXchange can transcode media files between a wide range of DV and MPEG-2 formats, including both SD and HD, as well as additional low-bit-rate distribution formats such as H.264. The scalable architecture of MediaGrid enables ProXchange to bring new levels of performance by distributing jobs across multiple processors in a MediaGrid active storage system.

The ProXchange system comprises of a core ProXchange JobDirector (PXD-2000) which is responsible for managing and controlling all jobs within the ProXchange system and optional additional ProXchange JobScalers (PXD-2001) which can be added to the system for scalability and increased performance. Depending on the desired throughput and required performance of the system, any number of additional ProXchange JobScalers can be added to the system in order to manage simultaneous processing of content stored on MediaGrid.

ProXchange JobDirector – PXD-2000

The ProXchange JobDirector runs the ProXchange server management application that contains the rules engine for managing transcode jobs within the system and is responsible for splitting and distributing jobs to the available ContentServers in the MediaGrid.

When a job is submitted to the system, it is added to the ProXchange JobDirector queue for processing. ProXchange JobDirector requests a pool of available processing resources from MediaGrid using the Grid Processing Framework. Once these resources are allocated, the application divides this job in to smaller tasks that are each assigned to a ContentServer in the MediaGrid. ContentServers process these tasks in parallel

Modes of Operation

Type Details
Automated Using the ProXchange Manager software application users can confi gure a set of rules for any directory on a MediaGrid system. These rules include all the required output parameters including format, bit-rate, wrapper type and output directory. The ProXchange Manager will then monitor that directory and automatically transcode the content using the parameters specifi ed and place the output in the specifi ed directory. This allows external applications to monitor those output directories and then post-process that content as desired.
Manual The application allows users to browse the connected Omneon MediaGrid system to locate some content that requires conversion. Users can then select to transcode that content using a set of transcode rules already confi gured within the system.
API The ProXchange API allows third-party applications to interact and control the ProXchange system via a set of external commands available via HTTP.
