MXF Workflow

Many broadcast media professionals struggle with the issue of trying to transfer files from one piece of broadcast equipment to the next, while maintaining metadata. MXF aims to solve these problems through the standardization. Omneon has embraced this format, and enhanced the Omneon Spectrum system to accommodate storage of MXF files natively in the file system. Doing so eliminates the need for gateway computers and translation software, which complicate workflows, and introduce translation errors and metadata loss.

Omneon’s commitment to protection of customer investment is emphasized by the fact that this new functionality is offered in addition to support for existing files on the system.

Designed from inception to support format independent storage, the Omneon file system requires no changes in order to be able to support this functionality. Files which are ingested over IP as MXF files are simply stored on the file system like any other file.

On ingest via a MediaPort, the user is given the choice to store a clip as QuickTime-wrapped, or MXF-wrapped. No gateway or translation software is required. There is no need to transcode existing QuickTime based files. QuickTime files and MXF files can coexist on the same server, and seamlessly play “back to back”.

Omneon has recently announced native support for MXF across all its systems.  This support will be released to customers later in the 2nd quarter of 2004.  MXF compatibility will be a free upgrade to all customers and can be applied to all existing Omneon installations.  For more information, please contact your sales representative.
